Can you study a Master without a bachelor’s degree, or with an unrelated one?
It is one of the most common questions among those who want to keep learning: “I would like to do a Master, but I do not have a university degree” or “my qualification is from a completely different field, will they accept me?”. The short answer is that, in many cases, there are routes, and often more than people think. In this article we explain them.
The problem with traditional routes
Access to an official Master in Spain usually requires a university bachelor’s degree, and often that the degree is related to the field of the Master. This leaves out many talented and experienced people:
- Professionals with a long career but no formal university degree.
- Graduates in one field who want to pivot towards a different one.
- People with qualifications obtained abroad that are difficult to have recognised.
For all of them, the official route can be a wall. But it is not the only route.
The título propio: a more flexible way in
This is where the título propio makes an important difference. Not being subject to the same rigid framework as official degrees, título propio programmes tend to have more flexible access criteria.
This means that, in many cases, it is possible to access a título propio Master by:
- Taking professional experience into account, not just previous qualifications.
- Admitting qualifications from fields other than the Master’s.
- Considering diverse profiles that bring value to the programme.
It is important to be clear on one point: flexibility does not mean an absence of standards. Good programmes remain selective and assess each application as a whole. What changes is that the door does not close automatically for not having the “correct” qualification on paper.
Why experience counts too
More and more, quality education recognises that a candidate’s value is not measured by their academic record alone. A solid professional career, motivation, capacity for work and potential are all factors a good programme takes into account.
In fact, in highly practice-oriented fields such as business, technology, artificial intelligence or marketing, real experience and a willingness to learn can be as valuable as a specific qualification. A professional who has worked in a sector for years can get even more out of a Master than someone recently graduated with no experience.
It is worth trying
If you have considered doing a Master but believe your academic situation rules it out, the best advice is simple: find out and apply. Many people dismiss the idea on an assumption, without ever asking, and miss an opportunity that was within reach.
Before giving up on it, it is worth:
- Checking the access requirements of the programme you are interested in directly.
- Explaining your specific situation and asking about the routes available for your profile.
- Preparing a strong statement of motivation that highlights your experience and your goals.
In many cases, the answer is more open than you expected.
In summary
Not having a university degree, or having one from a different field, does not always close the door to studying a Master. Título propio programmes offer more flexible access routes that value experience and potential alongside the academic record, without giving up quality or selectivity. If this is your case, it is worth finding out and taking the step: the opportunity may be closer than you think.
